Drew Barrymore's Classic First Appearance | Carson Tonight Show Airdate: 07/28/1982
What I adore about Drew? She started out adorable, smart, funny, bright eyed and bushy tailed. She fell (lol not talking about on the stage but this works too) early. She picked herself up, got herself clean, took control and is: smart, funny, adorable, bright eyed and bushy tailed again! She is a strong business lady! She is so sweet. Genuinely kind. She became and advocate for child actors. She is amazing! I honestly love her! My mother wrote her a letter when she was little and got a hand written letter back. Drew was younger than my mom, but not by much. My mother has dementia now. We were on vacation at a quiet location and my mother suddenly perked up and started waving. I turned to see a lady walking on the beach wearing sunglasses. By the time it registered to me she looked like Drew, my mother was jogging up to her with her service dog running beside her. Drew knelt down and started petting Mom's dog and waited for Mom to catch up and for me to catch up to Mom. (The dog's collar has a tag with special instructions). Drew and my mom were full on talking and making each other laugh. I told her I was sorry and was going to get Mom to come with me. Drew said, "Why? Don't be sorry. We are talking. Can she walk with me?" I was stunned as my mom and Drew spent almost a full our on the beach walking, talking, looking at shells and picking up trash (my mom doesn't go anywhere without her trash bags and this is something she does). It was honestly so amazing to watch my mom! I didn't take pictures, this was a private moment and people come there for privacy. When Drew and mom came back to me, Drew asked mom if she could take a selfie with her and (dog's name). Mom was so excited and said sure! Then we got to take pictures of Mom and Drew. This beautiful lady is still this sweet. Mom still has her pictures. She thinks she was in a movie with Drew though. She doesn't remember the vacation part of it. She always asks me what movie it is from. I tell her, "A Special Walk" and she says ok. Lol
That was a great story! A Special Walk it was..Thank you for sharing this moment.
Oh my ❤️ you are just as sweet & true as Drew 💖 So nice that your mother & yourself had/have this moment & memory. I love my fellow Pieces/Piscean's we definitely live in the moment, are brutally honest & real. We feel everything 🌹 Thank you for sharing & being so respectful ✌️
She is clean and sober thanks to God ans AA
That's a wonderful story. Thanks for sharing
What a beautiful experience Drew sure is a true sweetheart 💛🙏💛
Carson nailed the interview. Never talked to her like she was a little girl. She was pure magic.
He seemed very uncomfortable to me.
she had so much intelligence and personality for being only 7 years old! so adorable! she was born to be a star. this is such a great interview 🥺
Guess what new generation my girl only 2.5 speaks 3 languages hehe
@Dazz 416 uhh i agree i’m a fan of hers lol
@Ashley Rae FYI - we are a product/reflection of our parents/environment until we get out on our own. Then we can assess ourselves & make needed changes for our health. Over the last 20+ years you can see Drew healed & found her true self & her children will/have benefit(ed) from Drew's parents errors/short comings. We can learn from our parents, what to do & what not to do in life, what to repeat & what not to repeat. Plus Drew also had the Barrymore family history to deal with, I'm sure it wasn't always easy. Drew broke the cycle & that's all that matters. I very much enjoy Drew. My wish for you is that you break in away from being a Troll 👍
she had too much personality. spielerg said so.
see her today
Carson has a way in his interviews, especially with children, to draw people out and really "communicate" so well with them. He never talks over anyone as some will do, and he always keeps things wonderfully positive! We lost a great communicator when he passed.
@aniyah smith Damn if you are an older man, all you have to do is breathe and people will be calling you creepy
He was the best! Legendary!!
Love Drew. She was always so adorable. Love her ancestors acting too!
@Maria What sexism? You are griping about nothing.
@Ms. Miller I'm sure Steven Spielberg remembers this but he may wish it wasn't out there. Just sayin
How does a 7 year old steal the show effortlessly like that? I completely lost track of time and enjoyed every minute of it. Props to Carson for letting her shine.
I love Drew Barrymore. Her innocence, wit, mannerisms, smile with milk teeth, are so amazing. I have seen her movies, from E.T. to Charlie's Angels....
And Music and Lyrics....
I like her movie Poison Ivy♥️
When she took her little flippers out and put it on the table I melted 😂😂😂 she is just too cute haha
But first she wiped them dry on her dress.🤗
Seeing her at this age in this clip makes me cry She had such a tough childhood, wish I could go back in time to give her a big hug!
@Irfan R. She didn’t say what you think she said lol.
@Shmaya zuggot granted, but its not fair to assess that only those who grew up in third world starving experienced "suffering", and thus others' experience is minimized. Both are horrible things that a human being should not suffer, whether caused by an intentional infliction by another or a circumstance to which they are born into e.g. 3rd world/starving
@Shmaya zuggot when AIDS was making its first round through Africa, the rumor of a cure was to Sodomize a girl this age, so being reminded of third world conditions is proper.
Toughest childhood you think, was she born in a third world starving?
She’s absolutely adorable & smart with tons of personality! Johnny was the bestttt Tonight Show host and is still enjoyable to watch all these years later.
She was not drunk here.
It's even more sad seeing all these naive comments, calling this "cute," while these people are clearly oblivious as to the real reason why she feels so "relaxed" in this. I'm guessing they know nothing about her mother. Yikes.
She was drunk here. It's crazy to know she was battling a drug addiction this young. She was not sober here. She didn't get sober the first time until she went to rehab at the age of NINE.
There would mever be any tonite show like this.It would never be thesame during J C show, Drew is just adooooorrrable when she was a child and I never get tired of watching ET and all her movies till the present , whatever movie she has.❤️❤️❤️❤️
this video is so nice. my gosh she is sooooo adorable!
I love how genuine and so precious her friendship was with Steven from the very beginning. He totally came into her life when she needed someone like him the most and always stuck by her throughout her life and career.
She was so darn adorable!! I smiled from ear to ear throughout this interview.
I imagined you smiling from ear to ear like one of the aliens 👽 in MIB
Me too. I was impressed with Drew and Carson's interviewing skills. He was genuine and personable.
“My mom never kisses me goodnight because she’s always on the phone” 🥺 I can’t believe at this age she was out clubbing & drinking. it’s so amazing she’s still so accomplished with everything she went through
@Aloe Hah by this age she has said it interviews she had drank champagne. She’s never said anything about sexual assualt tho besides maybe hinting at it in her book when she was a little older and she woke up on a mans couch missing clothes. However we shouldn’t assume based on this because 1);that’s a big ass presumption to make 2) she’s a grown ass adult who’s in therapy & in a good place. She doesn’t need saving & she can share whatever parts of her past she wants. It’s not our job to add things.
Ok first of all I'm preeeeetty sure she didn't start drinking and doing drugs until she was like 12, which is still horrendous, and also the people in this comment section that are concocting sexual abuse out of nothing but pure assumption are the worst types of people
@Aracely Guerrero You’re a fool
I can't believe her dentist never told her how old he was. 🤭
@Aracely Guerrero yes, could be a mixture of shame, guilt, embarrassment and also she's still active in the industry. It could cost her jobs AND I'm sure she'll be threatened by lawsuits. It's sad and sick but that's why A LOT of off(enders) target kids, especially unprotected kids with negligent parents.
Probably one of the most iconic interviews in the history of this show. Drew fought through a lot in her life. Such an iconic strong woman.
Adorable. I watched this as an 11 year old kid who lost his 5 year old brother only a month before. I remember crying when I watched her this night.
This was nothing less than absolutely amazing. At 7 years old, I was captivated. Her presence is undeniable. And Johnny knew it was a very rare moment for his show as well.
This is actually so sad. Her saying her mom doesn't kiss her goodnight cause she's on the phone. And that just 2 years after this interview her mom had her out partying and so on. She deserved so much more.
I really can't believe that Drew actually hadda go thru that neglect, abuse and loneliness. I've been thru mad things and I heard she used drugs for awhile so I can relate. I ended up becoming a drug addict and I have alot of mental health issues. But I feel so bad that she had to go thru it. I wouldn't treat my child like that. I'm just saying that she had to lose her childhood cause her mom wasn't there for her. I love Drew Barrymore. She's sucha talented actress especially at her age to when she gotten older.
Johnny was a national treasure. There was not and won’t be anyone else like him. I miss him so much!
Wow wow wow!! That little girl put an ear to ear grin on me through the entire interview. How could you not love that. Her personality was magnetic. A talented and special little girl. That was hysterical 🤣👏🤣
@Ursula Mullikin I liked her outfits she wore on Letterman.
And she's got a great personality and followed her right into her adulthood her show is great, she's very natural and down-to-earth the only thing I don't like is the old fashion cloth she wears, it was ugly blouses with a bow, who is dressing her before she comes on the show? I'm sure a lot of people think the same thing but won't say it
The grown up Drew still has the awkwardness and genuine smile the little Drew had. I always like her.
I love Drew Barrymore. Amazing how real, original, and honest she is at such a young age. I so admire who she has become. A genuine loving person. She is one of my all time favorite actresses.
Drew gave a shout out to Stephen Spielberg telling him that she loved him...not her mother nor her father. Somehow, Spielberg was able to give her something she was missing at home. This shout out was true foreshadowing of what was to come in the following decades of her life. I'm so glad she lived to tell the story, unlike many of her contemporaries. 💜
@SidneyStone you don't know little girls if you think that's atypical behavior!
@Cheryl M Nope, she was referring to Spielberg. Carson moved on from discussing her swimming class by the time she said she loved Stephen. Plus, her response towards the little boy was very timid proving she would not have all of a sudden blurted out, "Stephen, I love you!" Please keep up, Cheryl. 😄💜
@Rhonda Hug Stop the lies. I would tell you her ACTUAL cause of death, but choose not to because you already know.
@Aimee Curry exactly! Spielberg and so many others aren't the great people we think they are. These children at born into this life. God save us.
@Nez Drew desperately needed a father figure because her own father told her at a very young age that he couldn't be a father to her. It was all very natural and innocent so stop with your fucking gossip and conspiracy theories. Stephen Spielberg was a good man and cared for Drew!!!
What a barrel of fun this video is! I love how much confidence Drew had at 7 years old! This made me laugh a few times. She was such a sweet and adorable child! She is a beautiful woman now too! The only thing I don't like about this video is I wish it were longer because I enjoyed it so much! Thank you for sharing!!
This was an award winning interview. She has the same energy today. Her talk show is very energetic and positive!
YES I LOVE HER TALK SHOW I ALWAYS LOVE WATCHING HER ,SHES A GOOD ACTRESS ALSO
She was so precious. It's such a shame the neglect she endured back then. And for her to turn out so awesome today.... What a miracle and a blessing
Absolutely precious and so refreshing to watch Drew and Johnny, both of them are just so natural and real ..a beautiful child she was, just one of a kind! and so is Johnny, there will never be anyone like him again... he was the best talk show host ever and I believe a fine human being.
I absolutely loved this. I am such a huge fan of Drew's. She is just as adorable now as she was back then. This was priceless!
This kid had our hearts from day one, and she still does.
I just love Drew Barrymore. It's surprisingly incredible that she still has the same mannerisms when she is live on instagram, the same charm. What an incredible woman she is. ♥️♥️
@Ally Harsha ll,',¡… 0..e¡lpw
exactly what i was thinking.
thanks for mentioning instagram. I have to look for her there.
I love how absorbed Johnny is in this whole interview. He treat Drew right and doesn’t talk over her. He’s so sweet and very professional.
I nearly cried several times. She was just the CUTEST kid. Omg. I just want to give her a squeeze and talk to her all day long
I love this. Drew is number one!!! I love her in everything that she has starred in. Her talk show is awesome. She was so precious as a child and she remains precious to this day.
She brings a smile to my face. So smart and adorable!
At seven years old, her personality was already larger than life. She was destined for great things. I remember that when it aired, I would safely say Miss Barrymore is true Hollywood Royalty.
@Kelli In Texas My oldest son is 37 years of age today....and I would only like to be remembered...as a good mum....no wonder with mothers like this their kids have problems....it's so sad....
@Jayne Crawford EXACT same with Lisa Marie Presley. Elvis allowed her to be a baby and gave her everything. Priscilla was too worried about her own career. The day after they returned to LA after Elvis was buried, Lisa was enrolled in a Scientology boarding school. She stayed there 9 to 17. Wonder why she turned to drugs? 😔 This the man Priscilla cheated on Elvis with Michael fell in love with Lisa and he would later right a book about it! 🤢. He eventually left Priscilla once Lisa turned 17 and he got caught watching her sleep and peeking under her covers!! So her only other father figure wanted to have sex with her, so she was shipped off so her mom would have no "competition". Adults sure know how to screw up kids! Moms need to learn to just be moms again.
@Jayne Crawford this true. Which is very sad.
@Cara Sloan Her mother took her to all these parties....even though she was so young....and she started drinking and using drugs....she was put into a community when she was only about 13 years old...when she talks you can tell that she lacked being loved like a child...infatti she is such a different mother herself due to this....I suppose sometimes you can have everything....even though you have nothing
I love them both. There will never be another Johnny. Pure class. A real gentleman and that voice!!!
I wasn't planning on watching the whole video but here I am... watching the whole video. I'm just in awe at this little girl, especially knowing everything she was dealing with!
Loved the Johnny Carson show and this was so good. Made me laugh and smile! Thanks for sharing
I certainly did not make a mistake by loving and following Drew, all this years. Thanks Drew for being so real and honest!
I miss Johnny! I was there for his last audience show with Robin and Bette (who stole it from Robin!). What a bittersweet night. I will watch anything Drew is in, she is a pure, delightful talent!
I would love to hear how much Drew remembered from this interview. Luv for her to mention it on her talk show. There is not a kid cuter than her at that age anywhere. She takes the cake!
I was smiling from ear to ear throughout this entire interview! I wonder if Drew still remembers her little friend Steven from swimming class and if he ever saw this interview and realized she was talking about him?!
I can watch this even million times and still find it so adorable🥰🥰🥰
I saw this a long time ago. I don’t think she is anything more than true to herself. She seems to still be the sweetest, open and generous person as an adult. She hasn’t sold herself. I congratulate her spirit. Sending her admiration & respect.
I remember when she grew up and flashed David Letterman on his show. Sometimes I wonder if her publicist told her to do it in order to shed her “good girl” image so she could get more grown up roles.
Hello Donna, how are you doing?
Some adults look nothing like themselves when they were children and Drew looks the exact same ❤️
I miss Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show. He was a class act.
I love this she was an adorable and intelligent kid, I remember when this first aired on tv, my how times have flown by! Drew all grown up in her 40s now with a successful talk show and she’s still a wonderful actress, loves her in the Charlie’s Angel movies, 50 First Dates and more. Johnny Carson was the best in the talk show business may he rest in peace.
Drew was both adorable & intelligent as a young girl ! A really enjoyable, rollicking interview !
Only Johnny Carson could have handled with such grace and humor to make it totally entertaining. He never made jokes at the desk for his own ego when talking to guests…much like hosts today when they interview. They don’t make em like Carson anymore. He was pure class.
@Adelaida force ?
Yep. Irreplaceable. Late night now is a desert of lame, one-side political "humor." Johnny knew how to entertain.
@Olga Lebedeva no
I was just thinking the same! He was so careful not to make any jokes at her expense and that nothing was said to belittle her or talk At her instead of To her. He was amazing with her and I am enamored with Drew and everything she overcame to become a beautiful woman. ❤️❤️❤️
The way he calmed her down after being embarrassed about slipping was expertise in motion.
Oh wow, this is gold! Drew is so precious here. She has been amazing in everything she does.
I love this show, she was very amazing and adorable since the very beginning
I love stars who are authentic. This video shows her true self and I absolutely live that she is the same. Love her personality and that she is genuine about real life things. She was and is quite cool! In this video, her vocabulary and personality is over the top!
She’s the sweetest most charming human I’ve ever seen and she was only 7 😭🥺🥺🥺 what an angel on earth
😂😂😭 you 😂😭 by
Hello how are you doing hope you're safe over there??
She's such a ball of sunshine. She always had a natural great sense of humor as well.
"You know what commercials are don't you?" "Yeah I've been on some" Pure gold♥️
Ela quase caiu😊muito linda e simpática desde pequena!🥰sou muito fã dessa atriz maravilhosa, sinto até falta de filmes novos com ela.🥰😍👏👏👏
I've been watching this video for the nth time. So inspiring and never get tired of watching. I love this kid.. So smart and adorable.
She was so cute! The innocence of a child is so precious!! Johnny was great with her.🙏❤️🙏
This is amazing, what a jewel she is, beautiful, poised, honest, well spoken & hilarious even as a child. And there it is, a declaration of love, a song & just a dash of validation for Johnny at the end. Damn, this is internet gold.
I'm sure some actors have higher IQ. She was unusually well spoken and articulate and good at communication at 7. It's not normal
Yes internet gold, Johnny is a class act! ❤
WELL STATED! It is amazing to have this preserved for all time. It would be interesting to listen to today's adult Drew recollect Johnny, Steven Spielberg, and being in the movies as a child.
Absolutely loved watching this interview...amazing personality Drew and Carson held that conversation with so much love and kindness. ❤️
Drew Barrymore has that magentic personality and it draws all people in, men and women both!! Blessings to Drew!!
That was the cutest! Such an organic interview. So smart and natural at 7!
That was so, Drew. She is a natural. She has not changed much with that bubbly personality!
I smiled the entire time! She was absolutely adorable, and Carson was just as adorable interacting with her.
There's a 30 year old soul in that 7 year old body. 😂 She's so precious and funny! Of course she's a star. Lol.....as I continue watching "it's about your face"! 😂
I have watched this several times. Each time I laugh so hard even though I've heard it before. It is hysterically funny. Drew is so innocent but sure of herself and Johnny goes along with her.😂😂😂😂😂
She went through so much and look at her now and her own show. Still a great personality.
“Do you know what a commercial is?” “Of course I do. I’m in some.” 🤣
She's so precious T.T Then and now
@dasteufelhund Not true, and a terrible exaggeration. While she did suffer with substance abuse at an unusually young age, she first entered rehab at 13. But the important thing is that she cleaned up, grew up and is doing very well. I cannot tell you when she started drinking (or using), but I'm sure she was clean during this appearance on Carson at age 7.
@worstoftheworst haha as are most of us mere mortals as we get older…Cute as kids but then puberty comes and hits us with the ugly stick 🥴😂. And Drew also partied hard as a kid so it’s probably caught up with her now.
Precious maybe, but ugly now
When she said to Johnny I've waited all my life to meet you😍
When he says “I’ma end up running off with you myself.” Then she responds “that’s what Steven says.” Poor baby… I’m so glad to see her succeed. 💜
Drew really brought out the best in Johnny. This was precious.
She is so adorable and hilarious!!! I'm so happy I watched this!!! Precious and natural, great actress!❤️❤️❤️
Drew was such a sweetheart during her appearance on the Tonight Show. Now she is all grown up and has her own show! Much love to you Drew! Be careful of today's Hollywood. Europe in winter is very pretty. Good luck in everything you do!
Drew had an outsized personality for a little girl. And Johnny just lit up around younger people and older people. There will never be another show like it.
@JQ2- That's true, I'll give you that.
@J. Vonhögen No one is perfect. Ask Jimmy Kimmel.
@JQ2 - Why are you so emotional about this? Did someone hurt your feelings, or is it just the facts about Carson's life that you don't want to hear? If you want to be a Carson fanboy, despite the fact that there is tons of evidence that he was a drunk, cheating wife beater who may have been a racist as well, then I will respect that. This isn't personal, so maybe it is you who should calm down.
@J. VonhögenCalm the fu*k down.
@halffulltome There was Johnny Carson and nobody else.
I never ever get tired of watching this video! I have watched it so many times and it always makes me laugh! Johnny Carson and Drew Barrymore are both amazing and awesome!
She’s so brilliant. You can really see her brilliance at this age.
Drew has unbridled innocents, this being a very powerful testimony of her upbringing. Such a beautiful well spoken girl. Very easy to understand why Drew has become a worldwide actor loved by the world
I adored Drew when I saw her first in Charlie's Angels and saw ET with kids and I recognised this sweetest little girl simply amazing and outstanding. She is so truthful, natural and kidlike not like kids in current days TV shows. Much love to the Lady and TV host, he also made it so comfortable for her. Sweet as Shirley Temple
Johnny puts her at ease and makes her comfortable the moment she comes in. Humility and class!
Yeah, true class!
hes a creep
She's so sweet I watched this a couple of times already and never gets tired. I just love this little girl even until today. God bless you Ms Drew🥰
After she tripped 😅
She was adorable then and still is… I enjoyed watching this very much 😂❤️
Hi how are you doing
Omgosh!!! Drew was sooooo adorable!!🤣😆🥰 She was so incredibly sweet and so likeable, not pretentious at all! And wow- so expressive, engaging, and articulate for a 7 yo. I loved how she loved going to the dentist!🤣 I laughed so much during this entire interview!! And what kid who is a star goes out of their way to make the adult interviewer feel good?! The way she sang that song to Johnny and what she said to him afterwards was just too cute! And she really hasn't changed much as an adult!! Still such a giving, funny, sweet, beautiful, thoughtful, sensitive, and kind- hearted human being!! We love you Drew!!🥰❤
Drew is adorable, smart and so sweet. I love the way Carson asked her questions.
She's got a bright future ahead of her she's cute, smart, may Drew do well as an actress and in life, she also funny too.
You might want to google Drew Barrymore now....
This just proves that Drew Barrymore has always been such an engaging human being. Love her to bits, then and now! So enjoyed this video
Hello Belinda, how are you doing?
I grew up seeing Drew on movies starting from ET and had loved her ever since. I’m still a fan until now. First time seeing this interview and enjoyed it so much. Still got that awesome smile and personality.
Omgggg this is the cutest thing ever!! I was not expecting to watch the whole 16 minutes but I did so with a huge smile on my face the whole time!
Drew's just the cutest!!! Such an entertaining interview w Johnny - absolutely adorable!
Drew is one of a kind! This is such a sweet interview... Johnny Carson was the best & missed dearly.
Hello greetings from the royal house of Dubai 🇦🇪...
Good morning 😃🌞☀️ how are you doing today
Isn't it incredible she lived through all the disfunction of her own family history of alcoholism and everything else, and emerged to be an accomplished television host and mother of her own children. Bravo, Drew! 😉
Yes! Sing it.
Yes Drew really is quite an amazing woman. I love when she took her teeth out, she is so honest, and so down to earth, was and still is. Love her.
@Bill Robbins She has revealed it. No one is outing her.
Believe that would be her story to tell. Not yours.
Absolutely! Drew didn't survive a dysfunctional childhood -- she triumphed over it!
I live that she was raised to be so confident and kind. Just love this girl. I really enjoyed watching her grow up. ❤️
My goodness! What a darling young lady that has only grown more delightful through the years! Seeing Johnny and Ed was also such a treat!!! So glad this appeared on my Facebook feed!!!
Johnny was the greatest host ever! He knew how to bring out the best in everybody including children making them feel comfortable and safe on TV. My heart goes out to Johnny Carson up there in heaven. He actually lived not too far for me ; about 45 miles down Malibu Coastline... Near Moon shadow restaurant.
Drew was such a honey bunny at seven and Johnny Carson was so amazing on this clip. I really miss his show.
She always oozes so much of warmth and positivity. I was smiling the whole time.
Me too...still smiling
I never missed an episode of the Tonight Show. I remember this episode like it happened yesterday! Drew had the cutest lisp. A lot of people don't know that her father is actor, John Drew Barrymore.
i really loved this interview. I was grinning from ear to ear, i think its because she reminds me here of a little girl i used to babysit who i miss
When we lost Johnny Carson, we lost a true treasure. A laugh and smile is the most valuable thing ever. Mr. Carson gave us those in abundance.
Wow. I love Drew even more. Never saw this. She's a true natural talent but more significant, a natural intuitive, emotionally connected and aware and authentic human. What a delight to see her uninhibited young self! Charming and leaving the big show business personalities stupified! Props to Drew! ❤️
Omg how sweet was this Drew was so funny I couldn’t stop laughing!! She’s only 7 what a big personality and pure natural talent Priceless
she was and is still adorable. i love her stuff! i bet she would be great to know in person.
watching this l love her even more!
Just an amazing human being sweet natural honest loving ❤ what more could you ask for in a person..she's a star then and now God Bless her always.
This girl's family has been in Hollywood for a long time, being the granddaughter of John Barrymore, famous in the 1930s, and great-niece of the renowned Lionel Barrymore and the actress Ethel Barrymore, she had reasons to be successful.
